QuickBooks Credit Card Payment Showing Twice? Fix the Duplicate Transfer

Published October 8, 2026 · LedgerMedic

If a credit card payment shows up twice in QuickBooks Online, once in checking and once on the card, the usual cause is that both bank feeds were added as separate transactions instead of one matched transfer. Keep the single entry that touches both accounts, delete the extra, and match the other feed line to it. The manual steps are below, including the parts that take time.

Fix it by hand, step by step

  1. Find both rows. Open the checking account's register and the credit card's register side by side. Look for a withdrawal from checking and a payment (credit) on the card for the same amount to the cent, dated within a few days of each other. On the checking side it is usually an Expense or Check; on the card side a Credit Card Credit or a second expense.
  2. Confirm the real payment happened once. Check the checking statement for one withdrawal and the card statement for one payment received. If the statements show two payments, you paid the card twice and nothing here is a duplicate.
  3. Check what each row is. Open each one. A proper card payment is a single Transfer that touches both accounts. The duplicate case is two separate rows, each touching only one account, with the other side coded to something else.
  4. Pick the one to keep. Keep the checking-side row if its category is the credit card account (or can be changed to it): that single row already lowers checking and lowers the card balance. If the checking-side row is coded elsewhere, fix its account to the credit card account, or delete both and enter one transfer from checking to the card via + New > Transfer.
  5. Check the period. If either row is in a reconciled month, check Reconcile > History first. Deleting a reconciled row breaks that reconciliation and you will have to redo the month.
  6. Delete the extra row. Open the duplicate on the card side, note the date and amount, and delete it.
  7. Clear the card's bank feed line. In Banking, the card's payment line should return to For review. Click Match and select the row you kept. If QuickBooks does not offer it as a match, exclude the line rather than adding it again.
  8. Check both balances. The checking and card registers should each agree with their statements. Re-run the reconciliation for any month you touched.

Write down both rows (date, amount, account, type) before you delete one. A deleted transaction cannot be restored from within QuickBooks Online.

Why a card payment shows up twice

Paying a credit card from checking is one event with two sides: money leaves checking, and the card balance goes down. If both accounts have bank feeds, each feed shows its own line for it. When both lines are clicked Add instead of one being matched to a single transfer, QuickBooks creates two transactions for one payment. Checking and the card then each carry the amount twice, and both balances are off by the payment.

Not sure it is a duplicate?

Two payments of the same amount to the same card are sometimes real, for example a fixed monthly payment made twice in a few days. The statements settle it: if the bank shows one withdrawal, there is one payment.

When doing this by hand is not enough

The tedious part is finding them. QuickBooks has no report that pairs a checking withdrawal with a card credit of the same amount, so you scan two registers by eye, for every card, for every month. It gets worse with several cards, with payments that match more than one candidate, and with the same Add-twice habit recurring monthly. If the card payment is only a duplicate on the books, see also how to find duplicate transactions.

The faster way

LedgerMedic's free scan finds credit card payments entered twice for you. It looks for one payment to a card that shows up as two transactions: the same amount to the cent, dated within 3 days of each other, one on the bank account side and one on the card side. It shows both with their account names and says which one to keep. Each pair gets its own Fix button: one click fixes that one pair after you have looked at it, the list moves on to the next, and every fix can be undone for 90 days. There is no fix-all on purpose, because each fix changes your books. A pair with a reconciled transaction, or a transaction that could pair up more than one way, is never fixed by LedgerMedic: you get the manual steps above instead. Connecting and scanning is free with no limit and no credit card. Run the free scan.
